The FORWARD, America’s most influential Jewish weekly newspaper and website, has won two Deadline Club Awards honoring the best in New York area journalism distributed in 2009. Selected in the categories of news reporting and opinion writing, the winners were announced at the Annual Awards Dinner on Monday, June 7, 2010.

The winners of the news reporting category for publications with a circulation under 100,000 are Jane Eisner, editor of the FORWARD; Gabrielle Birkner, web editor; and Devra Ferst, editorial assistant, for “Few Jewish Workplaces Have Family Friendly Policies” and “Jewish Women Lag Behind Men in Promotion and Pay.” The judges said these articles from The Forward managed to do what exceptional journalism does: Inform and spark change.

The winner of the Opinion Writing category is contributor Jay Michaelson’s “How I’m Losing My Love for Israel.” The judges said Michaelson argues eloquently in, of all places, a Jewish newspaper, about why he’s lost his love for Israel.

“It is so gratifying to win The Deadline Club Awards, having been selected from some of the most prestigious names in journalism,” said Jane Eisner, editor of the FORWARD. “The recognition that we have received is a testament to the quality work the FORWARD staff continues to produce every day.”

The Deadline Club announced the winners at an awards dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria where Robert Thomson, managing editor of The Wall Street Journal and editor-in-chief of Dow Jones & Co. was the keynote speaker. The complete list of winners is available at deadlineclub.org/awards/finalists-10.

Each year, The Deadline Club, the New York chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, presents the winners of its contest with the Club’s coveted “Rubes,” statuettes designed by the artist Rube Goldberg. The awards honor the best in New York area journalism that was printed, broadcast or otherwise distributed in the previous year.
