Survey Finds Ambivalence; Sparks of Optimism. Results From The Marlin Company Workplace Survey.

While workers' mood is trending toward optimism, The Marlin Company workplace survey finds employers reporting continued anxiety and fear among workers over job loss.

In a survey conducted in May 2010, The Marlin Company,, a Connecticut-based workplace communications publisher, found lingering doubts about our economy, as well as evidence of damage related to it. There were some initial signs of optimism, too.

The Economy
When asked how the economy is affecting their companies compared to six months ago, 58% said things are about the same or getting worse, 42% said things are improving. “While we are happy to see over 40% of the people saying things are getting better, it’s disappointing – yet understandable – that the majority do not see improvement. With lingering unemployment near 10%, a European currency crisis and gulf oil spill in the news constantly, the average worker out there can’t seem to find any relief from the steady drumbeat of negativity,” said Frank Kenna III, President of the Marlin Company.

Workers’ Mood
When asked, “How would you describe the mood among employees in your workplace,” those who answered Very or Somewhat Optimistic totaled 49%, versus Somewhat or Very Pessimistic, at 27%. Twenty five percent were neither optimistic nor pessimistic. When compared with the findings in the first question, this illustrates a certain optimism among the North American workforce.

Problems in the Workplace
Employees were asked if, in the past 6 months they had seen increases in the following in their workplace. The top three percentages were:
Stress or anxiety                                                     38%
Fears about job loss                                             24%
Arguments among co-workers                            8%

“Stress has been an ongoing, significant problem as reported by our customers over the past few years. The fact that 38% of respondents are reporting an increase is not surprising. Unfortunately it manifests itself in distracted workers who are more likely to sustain injuries or make errors, not to mention the toll that stress has on their health. Forced to do more with less, workers are cutting corners and taking shortcuts that have a direct impact on quality, safety, and ultimately the bottom line,” Kenna said.

Survey Methodology
The Marlin Company completed a nationwide email survey of companies from May 6, 2010 thru May 24, 2010. The target sample was 705 responses with approximately 29 questions. The results of the survey were calculated by using Raosoft sample size calculators. The margin of error is +/- 3.6 percentage points with a 95% confidence level.
