San Joaquin Community Hospital in Bakersfield, CA, is taking immediate steps to deal with a recent medical privacy breach.

San Joaquin Community Hospital (SJCH) is taking immediate steps to deal with a recent medical privacy breach where the hospital inadvertently released three separate patients' lab results to three separate attorneys.

“The problem was clearly a misfiling issue,” said Bob Beehler, President/CEO at SJCH. “The hospital is currently completing the process of converting all paper records to electronic records in order to prevent this type of inadvertent record misfiling from happening again.”

Upon discovering the privacy breach, the hospital immediately self-reported to the State Department of Public Health.

After reporting the breach, the hospital notified each of the affected patients to let them know about the breach and steps that were being taken to deal with the issue.

Government regulators fined San Joaquin Community Hospital $25,000 (the minimum fine) for this breach.

“We take the issue of our patients’ privacy very seriously and can assure them that this was not an intentional act,” said Beehler.
