Husband and wife’s home kitchen discovery turns into big seller in its first year

Perhaps no one would have expected it, but a tasty garlic garnish known as GarLic It! (pronounced gar lick it) has become so successful that it has made its way onto the shelves of 200 stores nationwide in its first 12 months.

“We had set a goal to hit 200 stores in our first year and it was a great surprise that we were able to accomplish that,” said Llance Kezner, co-founder of GarLic It!. “It speaks to the product.” Lori Peha Kezner, co-founder of GarLic It! adds, “Garlic is a very popular food worldwide and our all-natural product is healthy and the perfect garnish. Kezner and his wife, Lori, were just as surprised by the discovery of the garnish as they were its popularity. It all began one night when Lori tasted the remaining garlic, herb and oil mixture left at the bottom of a bottle of homemade salad dressing. She asked her husband to make more of the garnish, and the couple shared it with family and friends, who encouraged them to sell it. Now it regularly sells out at food festivals and national wholesale trade shows.

At the time, Llance was a former high tech sales executive that was in the process of making a career change. As he searched for a new job, Kezner, who had always been entrepreneurial, began showcasing the garlic garnish at food festivals. In May 2009, local grocer Matthew’s Thriftway gave the Kezners their first commitment to supply GarLic It!.

Over the past year, Whole Foods, Central Markets, QFC, various specialty food stores and gift stores from Washington and Oregon to Kansas and Connecticut quickly signed on. Two weeks ago, Northshore Quality Produce in Federal Way, WA became the two-hundredth store to carry GarLic It!
