Barbara Tierney, a 25 year veteran of the Yacht Brokerage Industry, has taken yet another page from the real estate market to develop the Yacht Industry’s first network of virtual assistants. In 1999, Barbara spearheaded an effort to develop the Yacht Brokerage Industry’s first true multiple listing system, Yachtcouncil.com, modeled after Realtor.com. Now, a decade later, advances in technology and internet use have created a need for brokers to be more savvy and proactive in their marketing and networking efforts.
Realtors have been using Virtual Assistants to address these needs for the past five or six years. Rita Polit, team leader and business coach with over 170 agents at Keller Williams Realty, comments, “Virtual Assistants have become a standard within our industry. It’s a cost effective tool for brokers who are spending more time working out of their home offices. Virtual assistants make their life a lot easier and their work more productive.”
Brokers, whether yacht, aviation or real estate, are independent contractors who work on commission and only a very few have dedicated assistants helping them with the increased marketing demands. “If you look at profiles within the 80-20 rule, you’ll see that the 20% who are doing 80% of the business, more than likely have their own personal assistant” says Barb Tierney, President of Yachtgallery.com, Inc. “Not everyone can afford to hire a full time personal assistant and even if they could, they probably don’t have enough work to justify hiring someone 40 hours a week.” Yachtgallery.com is a perfect fit providing specialized skills when needed.
The Yachting Industry is starting to show signs of recovery with megayacht sales slowly coming back and builders seeing some additions in their order books. Now is the time for brokers to ramp up their marketing efforts, but they’ve become very cost conscious over the past 18 months. Brokers need to increase visibility and they’d like to take advantage of cost effective marketing and social networking, but they need to do that without breaking the bank. Yachtgallery.com is designed to answer these concerns. At the same time, the downturn in the economy has created a wealth of talented assistants who were forced into early retirement or layoff. Consequently, we’ve been able to network a large pool of highly skilled assistants who are happy to be back in the marketplace. “Yachtgallery.com isn’t trying to invent a need—we’re just filling a need that exists.”
Since 1997, Yachtgallery.com has been an internet portal featuring luxury yachts listed for sale and charter. It was one of the first brokerage websites created in the developing years of the internet era and has remained under the same ownership ever since. Today, Yachtgallery.com, still with the same ownership, has taken a turn to the larger broker community with services designed to help all brokers move into the next phase of the internet.
