At the Direct Selling Association’s (DSA) 2010 Annual Meeting, Southwestern Company was honored with the organization’s Century Award. The annual meeting occurred in San Francisco and was the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Association.
The meeting ended with a black-tie event called the Centennial Celebration Banquet during which Southwestern Company and several other companies were honored for the work they have contributed to the direct selling industry. This includes their contributions to the industry as a whole and to the DSA as an association. Southwestern led the pack having been established in 1855 making it 155 years and is the nation’s oldest direct selling company. Some of the other honorees included were Avon Products, Inc. (126 yrs), and Fuller Brush Company (104 yrs) and Regal Ware Worldwide (100 yrs).
Southwestern Company is also one of Middle Tennessee’s oldest companies as it is headquartered in Nashville.
The DSA is the national trade association of the leading companies which manufacture and distribute services and goods sold directly to consumers. With over 200 member companies the DSA is based in Washington, DC. Some of the better known member companies include Pampered Chef, Avon, and Mary Kay.
Southwestern Company is a direct selling company that hires college students from all over the world to run their own summer sales business to offset their educational expenses. The product the student’s sell is Southwestern’s own books which they publish themselves. They are also the core company in the Southwestern Family of Companies, which relates to over a dozen companies which have been built by the students who participate each year in the summer sales program. Some of these businesses fall in the industries of executive search, consulting, fundraising, investments & finance, publishing, fine art, and insurance.
