Memphis, a critically-acclaimed musical originally performed at La Jolla Playhouse that opened on Broadway in October, 2009 was award Tonys for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Orchestrations on Sunday night.
Memphis is set in the 1950s and chronicles the first white deejay to play black musical on the radio. Memphis has already been recognized by Drama Desk, winning awards for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Actress in a Musical and Outstanding Orchestrations. Memphis also won the Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding New Broadway Musical, Outstanding New Score, Outstanding Choreography, Outstanding Actress in a Musical.
