Legendary chocolatier Dwight Barnes returns to Willmar, Minnesota. The Original Mr. B Chocolatier quickly is gaining a statewide reputation for making delicious, hand-crafted Belgian chocolates and Swiss truffles. The location (and website) is new, but the recipes are exactly the same. Mr. B’s now ships their chocolates refrigerated in insulated containers to all parts of the continental United States.

Marzipan from Germany; vanilla beans from Madagascar; European-style butter from Pennsylvania; fresh, sweet cream from Minnesota, and then, eleven-pound bars of rich, dark chocolate from Belgium.

Mixed and molded just right, something about fine chocolate strikes a chord like no other confection. Dark, sweet and smooth, it melts on the tongue and offers up an intimate treat for the soul.

Such was the dream of legendary chocolatier Dwight Barnes, a professional photographer who journeyed to Belgium to study the craft of making fine chocolates from a renowned European expert. He returned to Willmar with the knowledge of making Belgian chocolates and Swiss truffles, which he shared with his family. Soon this skill blossomed into a business, “Mr. B Chocolatier,” which quickly gained a statewide reputation for making delicious, hand-crafted chocolates.

Now in his 80’s and retired, Dwight Barnes has passed the knowledge of his craft on to his family. Daughter Kathy and son-in-law Steve Hanson own the new “Original Mr. B Chocolatier.” Daughter Mary Reishus is sales director, while another daughter, Susan Kallevig oversees the kitchen. Grandson Braum Sharstrom now bears the mantle of chocolatier, while the original shop’s kitchen staff has returned. Even Mr. B himself returns to the kitchen on occasion to have a little fun making his favorite Swiss truffles and Belgium-style assorted chocolates. Mr. B always says, “I only make the chocolates I like, and I like them all.”

The location (and website) is new, but the recipes are exactly the same. Asked by an incredulous banker why he would want to transition into the business of making chocolate, owner Steve Hanson replied simply, “Have you ever tasted any of it? Then you’d know why.”

The dream of a chocolatier is not just to make money, but to create delightful chocolate confections. Dwight Barnes realized that dream, and now his family is carrying on making the stuff that sweet chocolate dreams are made of. Their goal is to get their fresh chocolate creations into the hands of as many customers as possible, and to hear them say the following:

“Incredible! That’s the best chocolate I ever tasted.”
