A few of the Chinese Crested entrants are only 6 months old and are new to the world of ugly. Just recently Miss Ellie, a 17-year-old Chinese Crested who had taken the pedigree title last year, passed away, leaving the door open for younger Cresteds to fulfill their destiny. Chinese Crested have dominated the World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest in the past decade because of their mohawk hair, toothlessness, protruding tongue, lack of fur revealing often unusual skin, and general bumpiness.

A few other breeds will make an appearance at the annual event including a dachsund, a Chinese Shar Pei, two pugs, and two xoloitzcuintli. The rest are mixes who will compete in the mutt class.

The contest has three preliminary rounds in which the most ugly pedigree dog is named, then the most ugly mutt. Then a run-off between the two classes leads to the declaration of the 2010 winner. However that winner must go against past World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest winners to be declared the World’s Ugliest Dog ® of 2010. The two Ring of Champions include Rascal, who claimed the title in 2002, and Pabst, who won in 2009.

Pabst won the judges’ votes last year in the mutt class and beat Miss Ellie to claim the 2010 title. He then drew the adulation of the crowd to beat out Rascal for the World’s Ugliest Dog ® title for 2010. From Sacramento, California, Pabst and his owner Miles Egstad found themselves propelled into a new world of talk shows and parades. Pabst was also the first to win a year-round modeling contract from contest sponsor House Of Dog.

Rascal has made a career of winning ugly dog contests, claiming 10 so far as well as the big one in Petaluma in 2002 when he took the World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest title. Rascal’s career has extended to Hollywood where he has been cast in five horror movies. Rascal comes from a four-dog dynasty of winning ugly. His mom, Mai Tai, and grandmother, Lady Pink, are both three time World Ugliest Dog ® title holders. His Grandfather ChiChi is in the Guinness Book of World Records for winning 8 World’s Ugliest Dog titles. His owner Dane Andrew has set his own record by showing ugly dogs for the past 33 years.

Previews of the contestants may be viewed and voted on at http://www.worldsugliestdogcontest.org. The site also includes video of previous year’s contests as well as talk show footage.
