Hayward Baker Inc., North America’s leading geotechnical contractor, announces that it has acquired the wick drain and earthquake drain assets of Nilex Construction Group. The business, located in Centennial, Colorado, has been renamed HB Wick Drains and now operates as a product-specific division of Hayward Baker providing wick and earthquake drains to public and private clients across the U.S.

HB Wick Drains will be led by James Cramer, the long-term leader of the Nilex wick drain business. Cramer will be supported by his entire highly experienced Nilex staff of office and field-based professionals.

HB Wick Drains will now manufacture and install vertical drains for the purpose of accelerating the consolidation of saturated soils. Wick drains, also known as prefabricated vertical drains (PVD), are made of a synthetic band-shaped material that is installed vertically into soft soils in order to shorten the groundwater drainage path and thus greatly accelerate preconstruction preloading programs. The installation of drains is done using vibratory hammers and/or static methods, and the wick drain layout typically consists of a triangular or square grid pattern.

Commenting on the acquisition of Nilex Construction, George Grisham, president of Hayward Baker said, “Over the past 20 years, Nilex Construction has provided wick drain installation on numerous large Hayward Baker ground modification projects. This past successful relationship has made Nilex a natural fit within the Keller Group, and further strengthens and enhances our ability to provide a full range of ground modification techniques to clients throughout the U.S., Canada, and Latin America.”

Steve Scherer, Hayward Baker senior vice president, said, “This is an exciting new acquisition for Hayward Baker. Both Hayward Baker and Nilex have excellent reputations for performance and service in North and Central America in each of their respective ground modification specialties. HBI’s acquisition of Nilex underscores our commitment to be the leading American-based ground modification specialist in North America in this important field.”
