WhoTube provides card swipe protection of PTS carriers and their contents

Swisslog, a leading provider of automated materials transport and pharmacy automation solutions for hospitals, today announced that Rose Medical Center’s WhoTube-equipped pneumatic tube system (PTS) is fully operational.

The Swisslog PTS at Rose, one of Denver’s top hospitals for more than 60 years, is equipped with WhoTube, a proprietary card swipe technology that enables hospital personnel to securely send and receive life-saving materials. This marks the first time an operational PTS has been equipped with WhoTube.

Swisslog’s WhoTube technology helps prevent unauthorized access to PTS carriers and their contents. Authorized users are granted access to a PTS sending or receiving station only after swiping their hospital-issued identification badge. This built-in security feature is critically important when valuable items or controlled substances, such as pharmaceutical drugs, are sent through a pneumatic tube system .

In addition to WhoTube, Rose’s pneumatic tube system features another piece of advanced technology. It is controlled by modern Ethernet communications as opposed to conventional cabling. Ethernet communications is fast and reliable, and is a minimum requirement for many PTS technology innovations currently under development.

Rose’s PTS became fully operational in spring 2010. It is comprised of more than 20 stations serving major departments such the central laboratory, pharmacy, operating rooms and the emergency room. Nearly a mile of pipe (tubing) is installed within Rose Medical Center.

Adding to the impressiveness of Rose’s PTS is that it was installed independent of any other construction project into pre-existing buildings that had no previous tube system.
