Connecticut fans of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives are sure to love the newest place to get the best burgers around. Best Burger Cobalt, which opened this past April by proprietor Kevin Knislis in the Cobalt section of East Hampton. Unlike the previous restaurant in the same location which defined itself as a 50s retro drive-in, Best Burger is about the food offerings, rather than a specific theme. The restaurant’s motto is “bringing together all of your backyard best.” According to Kevin, it’s the best picnic you can have that’s not in your backyard and it’s affordable for the whole family.

The menu includes everything from a basic burger to specialty burgers with names like the “Kevster,” a bacon cheeseburger with fried American cheese and re-grilled to perfection, or the “Lola,” a triple burger with triple cheddar cheese and bacon. If customers don’t see what they want on the menu, they can customize their burger with specialty toppings including hot banana peppers, caramelized onions or heirloom tomatoes. Also available are other traditional favorites including hot dogs, fries, onion rings and backyard best sides like homemade potato salad, coleslaw and baked beans.

Capitalizing on years of working in the family grocery business, specifically the deli, Kevin has the knowledge and equipment to offer freshly ground meat daily. “Not many burger places can offer a product this fresh,” says Kevin.

And although the menu has plenty to choose from, Kevin has tried to keep the offerings fairly simple. “When going to other burger places, I have found there can be an overwhelming amount of choices on the menu,” says Kevin, “but people always go back to the basics of burgers and hotdogs.”

To make itself a memorable destination, Best Burgers will host special events such as Vintage Car Night on Mondays, Movie Night every other Thursday, and a regular Sunday morning Flea Market. “I want to offer a real family atmosphere, and hope to be able to offer activities on the weekends such as moonwalks, and pony rides,” says Kevin.

So far, Best Burgers has had terrific customer feedback. Posted on the Best Burger Facebook page are comments such as: “So nice to be able to have somewhere in town to stop in and grab a quick bite. Friendly staff, great food and indoor seating for cooler days like today,” says one patron. Another who sampled the hot dogs was impressed by the toppings, “The chili topping hit the spot as did the hot relish, which I trust was homemade.”

Best Burgers is located on 363 Route 66, Cobalt CT, (860) 267-0562 and is open from now until November 1st.
