“Not only are health agencies misapplying the law, they are gutting it.”
Englewood, CO (PRWEB) June 18, 2010
Board members of the Nevada State Health Division are proposing the adoption of regulations this Friday that would allow indoor smoking in restaurants despite provisions of the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act (NCIAA).
The hearing is scheduled for Friday, June 18 at 9 AM at the Grant Sawyer Building, 555 E. Washington Ave., Room 4412 in Las Vegas and at the Legislative Building, 401 S. Carson St., Room 2134 in Carson City. Board members will be at each location. The hearing is open to the public.
“Instead of doing their job to promote and protect public health from toxic secondhand smoke as required by law, health agencies are willing to sacrifice human health by bringing smoking back into restaurants, including those located in casinos,” stated Stephanie Steinberg, Chairwoman of Smoke-Free Gaming. “Not only are health agencies misapplying the law, they are gutting it.”
The proposed regulations would allow restaurants to section off areas for the sole purpose of allowing smoking. Inexplicably, health authorities have already approved of restaurant smoking areas prior to adopting the proposed regulations.
Nevada’s partial smoking ban has been in effect for three and a half years and the health agencies charged with enforcement have done little or nothing to enforce the law. The NCIAA was approved by the voters in 2006. There are no smoking exemptions for any areas of restaurants.
Smoke-Free Gaming strongly opposes the proposed regulations by the Nevada State Health Division because of the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. A former advocate for Smoke-Free Gaming, Cheryl Rose, died recently from lung cancer due to years of breathing secondhand smoke in a smoke-filled Las Vegas casino.
Smoke-Free Gaming is an advocacy organization for casino employees and patrons in support of smoke-free gaming environments.
