Joint effort paves way for volume production of high performance, reliable thermal management of power inverters.

Thermal management solutions for high power inverters used in electric vehicle, solar and wind turbine applications require advanced liquid cooling systems that have low thermal resistance, minimal pressure drop and exceptional reliability. Indeed, wind energy inverters in the megawatt output range are currently making their way into the marketplace. To deliver solutions suitable for these systems requires not only exceptional technology, but the capacity to produce quality product in high volume is equally important.

MaxQ Technology (Tempe, AZ) and and Sapa Extrusions Fabricated Components division, located in Portland, OR, have formed an alliance to deliver state of the art aluminum cold plate solutions to the ever growing power conversion industry. MaxQ Technology has positioned itself as a technology leader in the design, simulation and fabrication of liquid cooled cold plates by applying Friction Stir Welding joining technology and MaxQ Technology’s patent pending Q-CHILL™ internal fin and fluid routing design approach. Emphasizing the mutual optimization of thermal resistance and pressure drop, MaxQ Technology has developed reliable solutions for power converters ranging from 60 Kilowatts up to 2 Megawatts, capable of rejecting up to 50KW of heat. Developing designs that support all leading Insulated Gate Bi-polar Transistor (IGBT) power modules from manufacturers such as Infineon, Powerex, ABB, and Semikron, MaxQ Technology is well poised to be the industry leader in large scale cold plate products.

Sapa is one of the original developers of the patented Friction Stir Welding technology and will be providing MaxQ Technology with the critical production capability, supply chain infrastructure and quality assurance needed to be a leader in the high power inverter market. Sapa’s extensive aluminum extrusion, machining and fabrication capabilities facilitate lower production cost structures that enable competitive pricing and consistent quality. Sapa’s global presence allows MaxQ Technology to participate in the US as well as Asian and European markets without limitations.

Memo Romero, president of MaxQ states that “The partnership with Sapa provides MaxQ Technology the global supplier presence needed to provide solutions around the world. We could not be more pleased with this agreement.”
