Social network attorney Latoicha Givens hosts a 90-minute webinar July 5th to explain user privacy issues, how to create a legally sound privacy policy and avoiding liability when collecting user information.

Top social media attorney Latoicha Givens, principal at Phillips Givens LLC, is warning Internet and social media developers that not enough companies have instituted sound privacy policies - which leaves them vulnerable to significant liability issues from users.

“Remember ‘Quit Facebook Day,’” Givens urges, “because this issue is now front and center for the developer community. Any business that is creating communities online and/or harvesting data absolutely must have a legally sound, plain language privacy policy in place. If they don’t, they will very likely face the consequences down the road.”

To help the online business community, Givens is hosting a 90 minute webinar on Tuesday, July 5 (11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST) that tackles the key issues of user privacy, creating a legally sound privacy policy, and avoiding liability when collecting user information.

“Even America’s top employers struggle with this issue,” Givens said. “They often develop privacy policies that may be legally effective, but are so convoluted it is extremely hard for the average person to understand. It’s important that developers and business owners write privacy policies that are both legally sound and simple. Doing so will greatly reduce the risk of consumer complaints and better protect the company from liability.”

“Collecting user information is often critical to growing an online business, so having this type of policy in place is essential from the get-go,” Givens said.

Givens’ webinar, called “Avoiding the Legal Pitfalls of the Internet: How to Draft a Privacy Policy That is Effective Yet Simple,” will also cover:

  •     Facebook's recent privacy policy backlash
  •     Examples of companies who have effective yet easy to understand privacy policies
  •     The importance of transparency when having a privacy policy
  •     The importance of making it easy for users to learn of changes in privacy policies
  •     Detailed analysis of U.S. computer and Internet privacy laws
  •     Explore the need for opt-out rules instead of opt-in rules in the U.S.
  •     Discuss current proposed U.S. legislation advocating consumer friendly privacy rules
