California Transplant Services, Inc rallys eye banks in the US to provide corneas for Orbis International mission in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Seven US eye banks lead by California Transplant Services, Inc. have cooperated to provide corneas for transplant in the latest Orbis International mission.

Anthony J. Aldave, MD, Associate Professor of Opthalmology at The Jules Stein Eye Institute, Los Angeles traveled with the Orbis International team to Jakarta, Indonesia to train surgeons at the University Teaching Hospital in the innovative DSEK surgical procedure.

Orbis International is the flying ophalmological operating room staffed by volunteers onboard a converted jetliner. Orbis International’s team travels worldwide each year to teach and help in underprivileged locations.

Eleven patients of the University Teaching Hospital in Jakarta received corneal transplants onboard the Orbis jetliner’s sophisticated operating suite between June 12 and June 14, 2010. Each cooperating eye bank is a member of the Eye Bank Association of America and functions as non profit 501 (c) 3 charitable organizations with a mission to provide program services for sight restoration. The seven contributing eye banks are as follows:

  • California Transplant Services, Inc., Carlsbad, CA
  • University of Louisville Lions Eye Bank, Louisville, KY
  • South Dakota Lions Eye Bank, Sioux Falls, SD
  • DCI Donor Services, Sacramento, CA
  • Cincinnati Eye Bank, Cincinnati, OH
  • Lions Eye Bank of Nebraska, Omaha, NE
  • Kansas Eye Bank, Wichita, KS

The cornea is the clear tissue at the front of the eye which is surgically recovered from volunteer donors shortly after death. Tissue is recovered by trained technicians from the eye bank and is highly perishable. Dr. Aldave had hope to get at least 10 corneas for transplant and to be able to receive 11 donated corneas proves the success of the cooperation of the US eye banks.
