Online dating company Canoodle Limited (http://www.canoodledating.com) recently completed a study to find out how people’s attitudes towards dating online vary across the UK, and found that the type of relationship people are looking for depends on where they’re from.
Canoodle compared memberships across two of its sites: Canoodle.me.uk, aimed at singles looking for dates, romance and longer-term relationships; and NaughtyCanoodle.com, aimed at people looking for no strings, casual fun.
What they arrived at was not only the UK’s first LoveMap, but insights into the different ways singles are using dating sites across the country, to find their latest no strings fling, or a more traditional date.
If you’re from Derbyshire, Central Scotland, West Sussex or Buckinghamshire, for example, Canoodle founds that you’re far more likely to be looking for love online than you are in finding a casual date or fling. Canoodle.me.uk has more than twice as many members from these areas than its sister site, NaughtyCanoodle.com.
On the other hand, if you live in Essex, Strathclyde, West Sussex, Merseyside, Surrey, Cheshire, Dorset or Nottinghamshire, then – the findings suggest - you are more interested in finding someone for a casual relationship. NaughtyCanoodle.com gets the majority of these members, with 28% more members than on Canoodle.me.uk.
If you’re from Derbyshire, it seems that casual dating is not really your thing just yet. 3.5 times as many singles from these areas opt for Canoodle.me.uk over NaughtyCanoodle.com.
Tim Taylor, founder of Canoodle Limited, says “We have always believed that one size never fits all, and these findings support that. We have a great relationship with our members, and know that they’re turning away from larger, faceless dating sites in favour of a more tailored service. We set up niche sites because we recognise that people want different things, and I’m delighted that the public is rewarding us for that.”
Aside from the behavioural differences across the UK, there are also some surprises within counties too. People from West Yorkshire appear to be far more active online compared to their counterparts in North & South Yorkshire. Similarly, singles from West Sussex are more active online than those from just over the border in East Sussex.
The overall top regions for dating in the UK
When it comes to using dating sites, London is out in the lead (16% looking for love, and 10% looking for casual dates). West Midlands, Kent, Derbyshire, Hampshire, Essex, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Avon and Lancashire are next, accounting for over 31% of Canoodle’s total members.
The next ten accounted for 18% of all members, and included Strathclyde, Central Scotland, Devon, South Yorkshire, West Sussex, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Merseyside, Surrey and Cheshire.
So who are the naughtiest singles in the UK?
“We’re getting a growing number of people joining our fun site, but Strathclyde, Surrey and Merseyside would seem to be the naughtiest regions in the UK so far” says Tim. “Nearly 40% more singles from these areas are choosing casual dating over traditional online dating at the moment.”
