Celebrating one year as America’s Healthiest Beach as named by Health Magazine, Tybee Island, GA, is proud to announce the Low Country’s largest fitness event expressing a continued commitment to health and life. “Tybee Throws a Fit” kicks off Friday, July 2, 2010 on the Tybee Island Pier Pavilion. The event, sponsored by Zoelifestyle (http://www.zoelifestyle.com), features fitness instruction and appearances by fitness celebrities such as the Style Network’s Ruby Gettinger, from the Emmy nominated show Ruby on The Style Network, and Olympic trainer Michael Banks of Body by Banks. Local athletes, fitness and nature enthusiasts and local businesses will also offer a wide range of fitness activities for participants from around the region and the country.

Ruby will highlight the day’s activities by leading an outdoor dance class and holding a book signing for her memoir, Ruby’s Diary: All I’ve Lost and Gained. The Savannah native has inspired thousands with her reality TV series and book as she documents her journey to health and happiness. Hundreds of participants are expected when she takes the stage at the Tybee Pier Pavilion to lead her dance class and meet fans. Ruby’s gang, Jeff Parsons, Georgia Thompson and Jim Gettinger will also be on hand to work out with the show’s fans.

Also leading a workout session is exercise guru Michael Banks, founder of the successful Body by Banks (http://www.bodybybanks.com) gym and exercise video series. The former professional football player and official trainer of the 2002 U.S. Winter Olympic Team has helped thousands of athletes and ordinary people to improve their health, vitality, shape and endurance with his novel workout system. Banks will offer a class on the Pier and have an exercise DVD giveaway.

Also offering activities are local trainers Drew and Shazi Edmonds, Ruby ’s personal trainers who have helped her lose more than 200 pounds and become the ongoing success story she is today. Their business, Train Me 24/7 (http://www.trainme247.com), is located on Wilmington Island. Celebrity trainer Denny Starr—TV personality on Ruby show, trainer to the stars and Billy Blanks disciple—will also make an appearance on the Pier.

Other activities offered by residents of America’s Healthiest Beach include surfing, sea kayaking, walking and cycling tours, water aerobics, pilates, limbo, beach bocce and more. In recognition of the importance of starting good habits young island volunteers will also offer fun children’s activities such as Beachside Leap-Turtle, and Egg-and-Spoon Race and other fun events. Pets are also a part of the healthy Tybee lifestyle, so local pet lovers will also hold a Doggy Promenade in a local park.

In addition, many local restaurants are participating in providing healthy fare in line with the fitness theme. This summer vacation can be a jump start for healthy habits to take home.

Event creators, Toren Anderson and sponsors Stacye & Lannie Jarrell, owners of Oceanfront Cottage (http://www.oceanfrontcottage.com) & The Tybee Chapel hope to make Tybee Throws a Fit a quarterly happening on the Island’s event calendar. Even after Tybee’s tenure as America’s Healthiest Beach ends on July 1, residents hope to gain national recognition for their continuing love of nature, health and life. Tybee with its re-nourished beaches is a great place to get fit and stay fit.
