The mission of Ms. Wheelchair America is to provide an opportunity of achievement for women who happen to be wheelchair users to be an advocate on behalf of more than 52 million Americans living with disabilities and effectively educate and promote the benefits of movement therapy for them. Unlike traditional beauty pageants, Ms. Wheelchair America is not a contest to select the most attractive individual. It is instead a competition based on advocacy, achievement, communication and presentation to select the most accomplished and articulate spokeswoman for persons with disabilities. The selected representative must be able to communicate both the needs and the accomplishments of her constituency to the general public, business community, health care industry, and the legislature.
Erika Bogan is the reigning Ms. Wheelchair America 2010, and previously served as Ms. Wheelchair North Carolina 2009.
Erika is employed by Medical Mobility Center and is working towards her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She is proud of her children, and enjoys serving as a positive role model and advocate for people with disabilities. Erika uses a wheelchair due to an automobile accident in 2002. She describes herself as articulate, motivated and intelligent.
As Ms. Wheelchair America 2010, Erika helps prove that women who "happen to use wheelchairs" can be every bit as successful, vibrant, and powerful as other women. As Ms. Wheelchair America, the national titleholder has numerous duties. These include promoting awareness of the need to eliminate architectural and attitudinal barriers, informing the able-bodied public of the achievements of the millions of people with disabilities across the nation, and assisting with the establishment of programs in all 50 states by promoting Ms. Wheelchair America. During her year long reign, she will have the opportunity to travel visiting advocacy groups, making public appearances and conducting radio, print ad, and TV interviews. The commitment and personal example of the titleholder serves to further the mission of Ms. Wheelchair America.
"The Ms. Wheelchair America 2011 pageant will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan during the week of August 9-14, 2010 and Flexicise™, Inc. will be there to show and share information on our PMTD movement therapy devices as well as to present the winner with her very own machine for use in her home during her reign", says Mallindine.
