Uppsala University, one of Northern Europe’s most highly ranked universities, is to incorporate SunGard’s Front Arena, a global capital markets solution, into its Financial Maths Masters Program.

As part of the course, Front Arena will be used to show how the pricing of options is carried out in “real life” scenarios as well as in an integrated bank environment. The solution will be part of a course in which students will use Front Arena’s existing models. As students progress through their course of study, they will also be able to use Front Arena to build their own models or modify existing models.

Håkan Lanshammar, Professor and Head of the Department of Information Technology at Uppsala University, said: “We know that the link between theory and real life is important in enhancing the learning process and preparing students for their future careers in financial services. We are therefore delighted to be able to offer students first-hand insight not only into generic methods and algorithms, but also into commercial software."

Christian Kromann, general manager, Nordic, for SunGard’s capital markets business, said, “A thorough knowledge of mathematical models has become a must for the traders of the future, whether for modeling products in terms of risk and price calculation or applying advanced algorithms for competitive high frequency trading. By providing Uppsala University with the Front Arena solution, SunGard is able to contribute to the educational program and help prepare potential options traders of the future.”

About the course
The use of complicated mathematical models has increased substantially in the discipline of financial economics. By using these models one can study and simulate financial markets, e.g. the value of options, stocks and other security papers. To do so, computers and numerical methods are used. This course covers the numerical methods that are used within financial mathematics. Although the course is about methods in financial mathematics, the methods that are covered are used more generally. Thus, what you learn in the course can be used not only in the financial area, but in other areas as well. Use of commercial software as well as more theoretical parts are both included in the course. Examples of computational methods that are covered are Monte Carlo methods and methods based on so called finite differences.
