Rev. Garrett reminded the officer that his right to free speech was protected by the United States Constitution. He added that he was not in violation of loitering laws in that he was there with a distinct purpose.
Raleigh, North Carolina (PRWEB) July 10, 2010
Rev. Charlie Garrett, ordained minister and accomplished author from Sarasota, Florida, is on a 50-state journey across the U.S. to the steps of each state capitol building. His mission is to read the words of our founding fathers from state and national documents, urge people to pray for the spiritual renewal of this country, and conduct an open-air sermon at each stop.
The tour, appropriately dubbed A Capital Adventure, has been well received by residents and tourists alike. His sermons have been attended by passer-bys who stop to listen and take photos. Law enforcement officers have been accommodating and cordial as the pastor sets up his video camera and his sign and tracts depicting his purpose for the tour at capital buildings in Tallahassee, FL, Atlanta, GA, and Columbia, S.C. However, police on the capital grounds of Raleigh, N.C. interrupted his 4th stop. Approximately mid-way through the sermon portion of his visit, Rev. Garrett was informed that he was not authorized to be on the property of the capitol building, and that was required to either obtain a permit or leave the premises. Rev. Garrett reminded the officer that his right to free speech was protected by the United States Constitution. He added that he was not in violation of loitering laws in that he was there with a distinct purpose. He added that he was not obstructing walkways or access to the building in any way – in fact, he intentionally positioned himself off to the side of the building. At that point, the officer warned Rev. Garrett NOT to quote the Constitution to him, and again told him to either obtain a permit or leave the premises. With less than 10 minutes left in his sermon, Rev. Garrett opted to peacefully take down his sign, pack up his camera, and relocate to a public area across the street. As with all previous sermons on the A Capital Adventure tour, videotapes of Rev. Garrett’s sermon are available upon request.
Rev. Garrett has made it easy to follow him on his travels throughout the nation with a tracking map of his journey across the U.S.A., found on his website http://www.ACapitalAdventure.com . He will also provide frequent updates on Facebook and Twitter.
