Local insurance expert Dale Cole warns local businesses to protect their assets from vandalism.

Following protests in Dudley this April that turned into violent outbreaks, shop owners and other businesses are only too aware of the risks of vandalism. “A large number of local businesses do not have insurance cover for these eventualities because the possibility always seems remote,” says Cole. “On the 17th July, Dudley will see its third protest this year so I would advise shop owners and other businesses to ensure that they have adequate insurance to cover damage to property, other assets and injury to staff or the public.”

The latest British Crime Survey Figures show that, between 2008 and 2009 crime fell by 7% across the UK. Vandalism in particular fell by 12%. However vandalism is what is known as a ‘hidden crime’, with only a proportion of incidents reported to the police and less still officially reported.

According to the Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary (HMIC), crime rates for 2009 in the West Midlands Police Force area were higher than the national average with 6.2 burglaries and 10.7 violent assaults per 1,000 people. “Don’t leave your business at the hands of vandals when the right insurance policy could provide the necessary reassurance and protection.” Urges Cole

“Vandalism poses a significant threat to all businesses. Even companies that consider themselves to be at low risk could find their business seriously impacted by riots or antisocial behaviour. A good insurance broker will be able to talk you through the cover that you need. Be it buildings, contents, public liability or employers liability insurance; make sure you are covered.”
