Oil well blowout contingency plug and method for stopping a subsea oil gusher
Boise, Idaho (PRWEB) July 13, 2010
American Energy Independence website creator, Ron Bengtson, has filed a U.S. patent application for an invention that will plug the BP oil well and permanently stop the oil from spilling into the Gulf of Mexico.
The apparatus and method disclosed by the invention describes how to implement a plug with only limited help from the ships located at the surface of the water above the well. If a hurricane threatens the ships, the work at the seafloor would continue without interruption, allowing the ships to evacuate for safe harbor. The remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) would still be needed, but they could be operated from a submarine positioned beneath the rough waters, isolated from the effects of a hurricane.
The invention, titled: "Oil well blowout contingency plug and method for stopping a subsea oil gusher" offers an alternative to the relief well and can be implemented immediately.
If the relief well fails and the backup relief well also fails, the only other plan that has been offered is a proposal to use massive explosives to implode the seafloor, with the hope of causing the wellbore to be crushed by the force of the explosion and sealed off by the debris. This option is not failsafe; it carries the risk of rupturing the reservoir, exposing the entire volume of oil to the Gulf waters above the reservoir, via fractures in the seafloor caused by the explosion. If an explosion does create fractures, opening the reservoir to the seafloor, the oil will be expelled by the pressure of the reservoir, and then, as the pressure is relieved, seawater could enter the reservoir through the fractures, forcing the oil up into the Gulf waters, with no way to stop millions of barrels of oil from continuing to flood the Gulf of Mexico.
Members of the press are invited to read and review a paper that describes the invention.

AmericanEnergyIndependence.com first appeared on the internet during the summer of 2003 as a position paper advocating energy independence through the development of American made synthetic fuels. In 2004 the website was expanded to include all energy categories, complete with relevant technologies and in-depth discussion of solutions as well as exposé of political barriers that prevent progress.
