Dr. Asrade Abate of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia recognized the difficult challenge in more competently serving the patient population in his country on a shoestring budget, and found a workable solution in MedWOW. Ethiopia is the second most populated country in sub-Saharan Africa, with a population of over 81,021,000 people. Ethiopia experiences a high rate of disease, mainly attributed to communicable infectious diseases. As of 2003, the World Health Organization reported that the ratio of physicians to patients was only about 1:14,662. Ethiopia's life expectancy is very low, with the average person living to only 45. Infant mortality rates are very high, with 80% dying during or shortly after being born. Difficult access to good health care and a high turnover of human resources have also contributed to the burden. One of the biggest problems the sparse health care system faces is not always having access to advanced medical equipment, forcing physicians and nurses to make due with the bare minimum necessary to treat patients.
Dr. Abate is hopeful that the situation is improving, "This opportunity came about at an ideal time, as there are several milestones being reached in the Ethiopian used medical equipment market, due to the rapid changes and economic activities in the country. The Ethiopian government has finally committed a lot of resources to reform the public sectors and various institutions are carrying out these reforms. The health sector is an important part of this reform and is devoted to the construction of new facilities, and renovation of the old ones. Hence, there is a huge demand for good medical equipment and devices in order to furnish the new facilities with adequate materials. Our partnership with MedWOW is helping to make this possible, and we are slowly building the human resource and physical infrastructure necessary to advance the overall health of my people. "
