Leadership Coaching and Consulting Close Cousins, Says Madeleine Homan Blanchard

Coaching and consulting for leaders and executives is similar, but not the same, says Madeleine Homan Blanchard in a recent magazine article.

Consulting and coaching are close cousins, and at times the lines definitely get crossed.

Distinguishing between coaching and consulting may seem based on semantics; however it is vital to differentiate between the two disciplines for clients working in organizations. Leadership coach Madeleine Homan Blanchard says that clients presume that there is a difference between coaching and consulting but are not certain as to what it is.

According to an article recently published by Homan Blanchard with co-author Dr. Linda J. Miller in Choice Magazine, “Consulting and coaching are close cousins, and at times the lines definitely get crossed.” She goes on to explain that coaching focuses on the client, increasing awareness, bringing out the ideas to promote interdependence for the client to move forward in achievement. The basis of consulting is a solving tactic through advising, offering ideas and choices in the hopes that the client, team or organization will put them into action.

Homan Blanchard says that while clients require a blend of both coaching and consulting, it has no usefulness in the credentialing process. In order to prepare for International Coach Federation exams, it is essential that ‘pure’ coaching is demonstrated. Once ‘pure’ coaching has been mastered, the coach can then opt to make use of it or, when needed, blend in consulting as well. According to Homan Blanchard, “Both coaching and consulting have a place, as long as the coach is making a clear distinction for themselves.”
