The buzz in Hollywood is that this year's 2010 ESPY's was not only one of the "greenest" awards shows of the year, but for the first time since 2003 was broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre at L.A. LIVE. The ESPYs went to Beyond Zebra, Inc. once again to green the staff and production crew. Celebs, execs and media were outfitted with post-consumer recycled poly Baseball Caps that had bottle openers strategically embedded in the brim and shade-providing fedoras and cowboy hats made from 100% recycled coffee bean sacks. Apparel purchased from used clothing stores were embellished with the EPSYs environmentality logo which created a fun twist on "re-purposed" usage and reflected the creative atmosphere of the entire team. Adding to the fun, "after party" invites printed on recycled paper beverage napkins served double duty and beckoned all Hollywood A-listers to continue the celebration into the wee hours of the night without adding to their carbon footprint (the parties were right next door at Club Nokia, The Congo Room, and Lucky Strike).
ESPN has an unprecedented commitment to environmentally friendly productions and the 2010 ESPYs did not disappoint. Their efforts included a solar and wind powered press tent, recycled production sets, low energy video screens, low V.O.C. paint, and a red carpet made from 52,000 post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. By continuing stringent recycling and composting measures, like the recycling of their cooking oil into biodiesel fuel, the ESPYs were once again carbon neutral and virtually waste free.
The 2010 ESPYs aired live on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at 9:00 p.m. E.S.T. on ESPN. The action-packed event gathered celebrities from entertainment and sports to commemorate the best moments of the year in sports. Country singer Kenny Chesney and, actor, Will Ferrell were joined on stage by host, Seth Meyers of Saturday Night Live. ESPN personality Chris Berman, actor Zac Efron (Charlie St. Cloud), actress Ashley Greene (The Twilight Saga), actor Samuel L. Jackson, actor Tracy Morgan (30 Rock), race-car driver Danica Patrick, ESPN personality Stuart Scott, and action sports legend Shaun White attended the 18th annual show.
