I have been performing Outpatient Partial Knee Replacements for over 5 years and my patients have done incredibly well
Newport News, VA (PRWEB) July 15, 2010
A Hampton Roads resident is experiencing a more comfortable recovery at home as the recipient of a total knee replacement done on an Outpatient basis. This outpatient Total Knee Replacement, is the first surgery of its kind in Virginia and in the region.
Dr. Boyd W. Haynes, III, an orthopaedic surgeon with the Orthopaedic & Spine Center, completed Virginia's first outpatient Total Knee Replacement surgery on the morning of July 7th, at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, VA.
The patient -52 years of age - went home the evening after her total knee replacement, resting and recovering comfortably after spending less than 10 hours in the hospital. Dr. Haynes said everything went well for his patient during the procedure, which lasted a little over one hour.
"What is exciting about Outpatient Joint Replacement is that we are able to replace the painful joint and send the patient home to recuperate in the comfort of their own home and with their family", said Dr. Haynes. "By developing comprehensive patient care protocols for the home, our patients receive the same clinical care (monitoring of vital signs, wound care, etc.) and Physical Therapy at home as they would in an in-patient setting". The in-home care is provided by Bayada Nurses/Home Care Specialists, a dedicated team with experience in caring for total joint replacement patients at home.
"I have been performing Outpatient Partial Knee Replacements for over 5 years and my patients have done incredibly well", notes Dr. Haynes. "I began researching Outpatient Total Knee Replacements and found that they were being performed with great success at some of the better-known orthopaedic centers in the country. I knew this program would work well here and would provide Hampton Roads a state-of-the-art orthopaedic service previously found only in large metropolitan areas".
"Not every patient considering a joint replacement is a good candidate for the outpatient procedure", adds Dr. Haynes. "While certain clinical issues are always a consideration, I look for patients who are highly-motivated, in reasonably good physical condition and who have an excellent support system at home. Making sure those conditions are met first helps me to ensure the best possible outcome for my patients."
Dr. Haynes will perform the first outpatient total hip replacement surgery later this month (July). All Orthopaedic & Spine Center surgeons will all offer outpatient joint replacements to their patients who meet the stringent criteria for these procedures.
