As part of the ongoing commitment by Mission Essential Personnel, LLC, (MEP) to support the people of Afghanistan, CEO Chris Taylor has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF), the nation’s only independent, private, not-for-profit, non-sectarian, co-educational institution of higher learning.
“I am proud to be joining the Board of Trustees of an organization that is making a real difference in the lives of these students and for the future of Afghanistan,” Taylor said. “MEP is committed to investing in the future of Afghanistan. I look forward to helping AUAF meet its goals.”
Located on a five-acre plot in Kabul, AUAF has offered undergraduate degree programs, English classes, and professional development since opening its doors in 2006. Total enrollment this year is about 400 and 17 percent of students are female. Funded by the US government and private donations, AUAF follows the tradition of other American Universities, which promote enduring American values while respecting local cultures and traditions.
“Developing nations like Afghanistan often suffer from ‘brain drain,’ where individuals leave the country to receive their education – and then never come back,” Taylor said. “Institutions like AUAF turn around this cycle by empowering locals who can then empower their own communities. The key to lasting peace in Afghanistan is education.”
“Mr. Taylor will be a terrific representative of the university,” said AUAF Chairman Dr. Akram Fazel. “With his decades of international experience, Mr. Taylor is a wonderful addition to the Board. His dedication to Afghanistan and building its capacity – including education for women – is essential for our goal to educate the future leaders of Afghanistan.”
