On Saturday, August 14, to pay tribute to those we have lost – especially children – the Katie Elise Lambert Foundation will host a Butterfly Release event at Jeanes Hospital in Philadelphia. The Katie Elise Lambert Foundation focuses on increasing the awareness to parents, family members, friends and caregivers of the hidden dangers that present themselves in everyone’s home. The Foundation was named after Katie Elise, who at age 3½, was killed when an unsecured wardrobe cabinet fell on top of her.

Remembering a loved one who has died is an intimate moment, one that can be filled with sorrow and anguish. But to celebrate their life and how much they have impacted those around them – and to raise awareness of the cause of their death – is a way to stay connected and to honor their memory.

According to “Injuries From Furniture Tip-overs Among Children and Adolescents in the United States, 1990-2007,” from 1990-2007 nearly 15,000 children younger than 18 years of age visit hospital emergency departments annually for injuries received from furniture tip-overs. These include all freestanding furniture including wardrobe cabinets, bookcases, dressers, televisions, entertainment centers, cabinets, etc.

In addition to the Butterfly Release, where about 100 monarch butterflies will be released in one emotional moment, the August 14 event is scheduled to include booths where the public can learn more about various nonprofits and their missions. There will also be activities/entertainment for children including face painting, crafts, a moonbounce, games, and Chippy the Clown. Volunteers from Jeanes Hospital Pastoral Care Department will be on hand at the HUGGING BOOTH for the bereaved.

The Butterfly Release is open to all, regardless of how the loved one died. It is a beautiful way to remember a child, parent, sibling, grandparent, extended family member or friend. Individuals interested in releasing a Monarch Butterfly that day can contact the Katie Elise Lambert Foundation at info@furnituresafety.org or may visit http://www.katieeliselambert.org for more information. Please consider a donation. All proceeds go towards raising awareness of the dangers of unsecured furniture/appliances and child safety.

The Katie Elise Lambert Foundation would like to thank Jeanes Hospital, for their kindness and support for this event. Jeanes Hospital is an acute-care community hospital located in the Fox Chase section of Northeast Philadelphia (7600 Central Avenue, Philadelphia).
