Richard Greenwald, president of Concorde Staffing Group, was recognized by the Westchester-Putnam Workforce Investment Board (WIB) for his organization’s participation in its wage subsidy program. Hosted by Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino and Putnam County Executive Robert J. Bondi and WIB members, the meeting’s theme was “Workforce Development: Your Business is Our Business.”

WIB is a partnership between business leaders, employers and agencies whose common goal is to train and develop skilled workers. Its purpose is “to ensure that employers have access to a competitive and well-trained pool of workers. The WIB also works to train and match displaced workers,” according to the Westchester County government website. Greenwald is a member of the WIB.

The wage subsidy program provides employers with a pool of qualified candidates for entry-level positions. It also assists them in hiring individuals “who have been unable to find employment through conventional means,” according to the New York State Office of Temporary Disability Assistance (OTDA) website, which is funding the program.

Participating businesses receive a subsidy of up to $8 per hour for up to six months for qualified employees, who also receive occupational skills training to help them with their new jobs.

Richard Greenwald, president of Concorde Staffing Group, said that his organization is participating in the wage subsidy program because it gives people hope. “This program enables people to begin exploring the possibilities for a career,” he said. “We are helping people get to work and give them new opportunities.” Concorde Staffing Group is currently seeking to hire an individual who will provide general office support.

Donnovan Beckford, Director, Westchester-Putnam Workforce investment Board, commended Concorde for recognizing the value of the program. “Given the current economic conditions, the wage subsidy program provides a great resource for small businesses to identify, hire and train qualified employees at no cost to the companies for between three to six months. Concorde Staffing Group recognizes the value of this resource and has joined other businesses in taking advantage it,” he said.

To date, 27 businesses have signed up for the program and nine individuals were hired. For additional information on the wage subsidy program, visit ODTA online at http://otda.ny.gov/main/resources/accountability/2009-2010-WSP.asp.
