Swisslog, a leading provider of automated materials transport and pharmacy automation solutions for hospitals, today announced that London Health Sciences Centre in London, Ontario, Canada, has selected PillPick for its pharmacy automation needs.

PillPick automatically bar codes, packages, stores and dispenses individual doses of medications. PillPick can hold more than 53,000 unit doses in its DrugNest until needed for a patient. When requested, the unit doses are automatically assembled onto a thin plastic ring called a PickRing. The PickRing contains all the medications for the patient for a 24-hour period. It is barcoded so that it can be scanned bedside for verification before administration.

"We researched the robots available in the marketplace and determined that PillPick was the superior automation solution," said Pharmacy Operations Manager Ian McKechnie. "We are confident that the new robot will further increase the safety of each patient receiving medication from our pharmacy."

Installation is expected to be completed during the Fall of 2010.

Unlike most pharmacy robots on the market today, PillPick is fully automated. All packaging, barcoding, storage and dispensing are done within the robot virtually eliminating the chance for error because they are no human touches.

PillPick is a member of Swisslog's Automated Drug Management Systems (ADMS) product family. Other ADMS products include BoxPicker, ATP High-Speed Packager Series, and Inventory Management Software. Collectively, these pharmacy automation solutions streamline and optimize the operations of both in-patient and out-patient hospital pharmacies. From the packaging of bulk medications to storage, dispensing and logistics, Swisslog's ADMS products help hospitals reduce or eliminate costly medication errors while improving the speed and efficiency of the drug supply chain.
