Energy Alternatives for the 21st Century (EA-21) has challenged Members of Congress to test their energy "IQ" by taking an Energy Quiz that will be printed in the July 26th special issue of Roll Call newspaper, before passing comprehensive energy legislation that Congress is considering in the light of the BP Oil spill, and that Majority Leader Reid has vowed to bring to a vote before the Congressional August recess. EA-21 also has invited voters to see if they can do as well, or better, than their Congressional representatives.

We encourage every American to take the Energy Quiz and then contact your Congressional representative and Senators to find out how well they did, and how your own score compares.

Posing such questions as “What percentage of oil comes from drilling in the Gulf of Mexico,” Energy Alternatives for the 21st Century (EA-21) has challenged Members of Congress to take an energy quiz before passing comprehensive energy legislation that Congress is considering in the light of the BP Oil spill. Distributing the 10-question quiz to every Congressional office via an upcoming special July 26th Energy issue of Roll Call Newspaper, the EA-21 "advertorial" in Roll Call says “We challenge you to find your energy IQ by taking the test below.” The Answers Page asks Members of Congress “How did you score on our quiz?”

“We doubt that most Members of Congress or their staffs have even thought about most of the questions that we are asking about oil in this quiz,” said EA-21 President Jack Halpern. “We hope that our Energy Quiz will alert them to the real issues that need to be considered before any solutions can be formulated.”

“For example,” explained Halpern, “we doubt that most Members of Congress have thought about the fact that utility regulation will do nearly nothing to reduce the oil we drill in the Gulf, since practically no oil is used for electricity in the first place. So, the question we asked Members of Congress, to see how much they knew about this subject was: ‘What percentage of U.S. oil consumption is used for producing electricity?’ The correct answer is 1 percent.”

“Or, to provide another example,” added EA-21 Secretary Dennis Klein, “we asked them what consumes most of the oil we use in America. The correct answer to that question is that transportation uses more oil, by far, than any other use -- 71%.”

“You don’t have to be a Member of Congress to take the Energy Quiz,” added EA-21 Executive Vice President Neil Goldstein. “Anyone can take it and see how well they can do by going to our website at http://www.ea-21.org/Quiz.pdf. We encourage every American to take the Energy Quiz and then contact your Congressional representative and Senators to find out how well they did, and how your own score compares.”
