Irish small business owner uses videos and viral marketing to give himself an edge over his competitors in €50,000 online conetest.

Oliver Dempsey of Tradesmen.ie snagged a spot as a finalist in Telephonica O2 €50,000 competition. His company’s website, http://www.Tradesmen.ie , matches customers with tradesmen.

The online competition where small business owners in Ireland can Win €50,000 ($64,590 USD) in prizes by submitting their company’s sales pitch is hosted by Telephonica O2’s Ideas Room.

Six Businesses that entered before the July 9th deadline were short listed for the finals after sending in their “best” sales message about their business via email, Twitter or text to O2’s website. Contest rules specified all pitches had to be kept to less than 140 characters. Details of the contest progress can be found at http://webkit.o2online.ie/ideasroom/

During week 3, Oliver submitted the following winning pitch entry: “Want to save time and money on tradesmen and trade professional services? Get up to 4 quotes and compare prices on http://www.Tradesmen.ie”.

Since the competition determines the winner by public vote, Oliver consulted http://www.GuaranteedViral.com on how he could increase his exposure (and votes) by using viral marketing methods.

“We noticed Oliver was a very likeable guy and that is always a good thing when using videos to gather votes. However, his video was truly unique (among his competitors) in that he actually used his blooper reel to add a very humorous and more human feel to his YouTube promo video,” commented Maurice Evans, CEO of GuaranteedViral.com.

“He agreed with our suggestion that the best sales pitch is of no use if it has no exposure. Since SEO is so slow and ineffective, we put together a mini-internet saturation package that would help him viralize his video so he could get the word out faster to try to generate extra votes.”

You can view the popular video (including the now famous, yet uncooperative Daisy the Cow) that has been generating his votes here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU1H6YmGq0E

The contest is still in progress and accepting votes for all finalists until July 25, 2010 . You can see all finalists and vote for Oliver at http://webkit.o2online.ie/ideasroom/140-character-sales-pitch-weekly-finalists/

So far Oliver has accumulated 1315 votes, a full 250 votes beyond his closest competitor. It looks like his viral marketing efforts are very close to paying him a return of €50,000 in prizes.
