Pedal for Your Cause is a fundraising bike ride & festival in its inaugural year intended to help raise money and awareness for people with disabilities through Assisted Cycling Tours (ACT). ACT is an organization that does bicycle trips for people with developmental and/or physical disabilities and their families
“We were looking for a way to raise money for cycling programs for the disabled, and a cycling event seemed to be the perfect match,” said David Schafer, Event Director.
The event will take place at Left Hand Brewing Co., in Longmont, CO on Sunday August 22, 2010. There will be 10 and 25 mile routes to ride and a family festival after the ride. The entry fee is $40 before August 15, and $50 after that until the day of the event. In addition to the ride, the fee includes a commemorative t-shirt (if registered by August 1) as well as lunch afterward. There will be kids activities as well as music, provided by DJ on Demand, and a silent auction.
“We’re looking forward to great ride and festival,” said Bob Matter, Executive Director of Assisted Cycling Tours. In addition to our riders, we are offering our tandems to people with disabilities so that they can enjoy the ride as well,” Matter continued. “Cycling on a tandem is a great equalizer for people with disabilities, something you don't have to do fast to enjoy and it's just healthy,” according to Matter.
The event does not require a fundraising minimum, but encourages people to raise money to support cycling programs for a disability that is close to their hearts. “Our event allows fundraisers to tell us where to spend their money,” said Schafer. “If anyone specifies a disability, be it Autism, Down Syndrome, MS, or any other disability, we will earmark those funds to doing a bike program with that population.”
Pedal for Your Cause has received an incredible amount of support from the community. Sponsors include Northwestern Mutual, First Bank, Basil Docs Pizzeria, DJ on Demand, Eldorado Springs Water, Bike-n-Hike, Vitamin Water, Powerade, Third Street Chai, Justin’s Nut Butter and 34 Degree Crackers
Assisted Cycling Tours (ACT) began serving the disabled population through a variety of bicycle trips across Colorado in 2007. The organization’s primary goal is to foster confidence and independence in those with disabilities while offering the family an opportunity to spend time together. ACT was started by parents of children with developmental disabilities as a way to help other families.
“ACT was started to give families a way to be together doing something 'normal.' It also allows both parents and kids to get together with other families and share the experience,” said Matter. “The divorce rate amongst families with a disabled child is approximately 90%. One of the reasons for this is the lack of activities a family can do together. ACT was founded for this reason.”
