China’s formula for creating wealth is top-down: the government picks a focus, the private sector responds, and the train, so to speak “leaves the station”. The American formula needs a bottom-up initiative. Right now, Greater Philadelphia’s business community, academia, nonprofits and agencies are getting organized to profit from the sectors where China is moving fastest.

“Life sciences; health care and health care IT; clean and renewable energy; environmental compliance; and the financial and business services ecosystems that support emerging tech are not just China’s top priorities for international cooperation, they are also strengths of Philadelphia’s regional economy,” says M.T. Cooke, who is a Philadelphia native, a long time China hand, and one of the rising stars of the US-China clean tech policy and investment world.

Cooke and The China Business Network, an online community of people all over the world who do business with China, are bringing their local and global expertise together to host together to organize Put China in Your Business Future: Health & Green Philadelphia, on September 8 at the Cira Center (http://healthandgreen.eventbrite.com/). CEO Panels in Green Tech/Clean Tech; Health & Pharma Tech; and Financial and Operating companies active in these sectors in China will address attendees on that day. The full program with panelists and keynote speaker will be announced August 1.

A third organizer is Jun Huangpu, healthcare industry expert and founder of the Main Line Chinese Culture Center, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit active since 2003 in building understanding with China through educational programs and educational exchange.

Janet Carmosky, CEO of The China Business Network (http://www.thechinabusinessnetwork.com/) explains, “There’s real opportunity for green, clean, pharma, R&D, health tech, and services companies in China. We want to be sure that everyone in those sectors has the knowledge, the tools, and the network to pursue success in China.” There are still a few slots available for corporate sponsors to get involved. Group and affiliate relationships for ticket discounts are also being worked out now.

China Business Boot Camp Philadelphia, on February 18, 2010, sold out the Union League. Health & Green is being supported, so far, by Platinum sponsor Orchestrall – a Phila-based China market access specialist – and Silver Sponsor BDO, which is one of the world’s leading accountancy and professional service organizations.
