Attorneys from the New York law firm of Faga Savino, LLP, have filed a civil lawsuit on behalf of the estate of Marcelo Lucero, an undocumented immigrant from Ecuador who was attacked and killed in 2008 by a group of teenagers in Long Island.

The lawsuit, Lucero v. Conroy et al (Index No. 09-43986), was filed in the Supreme Court of the State of New York for the County of Suffolk. The complaint was served against the seven men who participated in the attack, as well as their parents.

Lucero, a 37 year-old Ecuadorean immigrant, was stabbed to death by a white teenager in Patchogue, N.Y., in 2008 in a case that that put a spotlight on anti-Hispanic violence on Long Island. Lucero, who worked at a dry cleaning shop, was surrounded and attacked by Jeffrey Conroy and six others in a parking lot of the Patchogue train station shortly before midnight on Nov. 8, 2008. Lucero and a friend were walking to another friend's house as the group approached. The two men were taunted and then beaten before Lucero was stabbed by Conroy.

Earlier this year, Conroy was convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime, gang assault and attempted assault against three other Hispanic men. He was sentenced on May 26, 2010, to 25 years in prison.

"Marcelo was a quiet, peaceful man who worked at a dry cleaning store in order to support his mother, another sister and a nephew back in Ecuador," said Kevin B. Faga, senior partner at Faga Savino. "He was the victim of a violent, unprovoked attack and our lawsuit seeks to hold his attackers and their parents accountable in a civil court of law."
