Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center Urges Women to be Aware of the Signs of Pregnancy

The BirthCare Center located within Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center (http://www.floridahospitalmemorial.org) is urging women in Volusia and Flagler counties to be aware of the signs of pregnancy. Understanding the signs and symptoms of pregnancy is important because each symptom can be related to something other than pregnancy.

“The most significant pregnancy symptom has to do with a woman’s menstrual cycle. Women who have a delayed or missed period could be experiencing one of those major signs,” said Cecille Tapia-Santiago, a Florida Hospital Memorial obstetrician.

According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the primary sign of pregnancy is “missing one or more consecutive menstrual periods.” However, some women experience pregnancy symptoms over a few weeks while others do not have any symptoms at all. Other signs of pregnancy may include:

Nausea or vomiting, morning sickness
Sore breasts or nipples
Fatigue
Headaches
Food cravings or aversions
Mood swings
Frequent urination

“If you think you may be experiencing the signs of a pregnancy please contact a physician right away,” Dr. Tapia said. “A physician will help you ensure the best possible outcome for your pregnancy,” she added.
