OneCommand Teams with Auto Dealerships to Provide Homeless Students with School Supplies

In conjunction with Project Connect, a Cincinnati Public Schools organization, OneCommand is working with client dealerships to support its annual school supply drive by raising awareness of the program, providing donation centers and encouraging dealership customers to participate by donating school supplies.

“These students simply want to go to school to learn,” said Jacob Close, General Sales Manager at Columbia Hyundai and Columbia Acura in Cincinnati. “As the school year begins, we cannot think of a better way to contribute to our community than by helping support the education of these young kids who have neither a voice nor a choice in being homeless.”

The average age of a homeless person is only 9 years old, according to Cincinnati’s Project Connect, whose mission, along with its partner organization, Faces Without Places, is to improve the educational lives and opportunities of homeless kids. Project Connect’s annual drive provides school supplies to an average of 1,064 homeless students every year.

“A backpack full of new school supplies is a real confidence booster for the children and youth that we serve. They feel better knowing they have everything they need to get off to a good start,” commented Karen Fessler, Project Connect’s Director.

Those who are interested in supporting the drive can do so at one of the following local dealerships: Kings Nissan, Kings Toyota, Columbia Hyundai, & Columbia Acura. 2010 school supply lists are available at the participating dealerships or donors can simply drop off any type of school supply – all donations will be accepted. The drives will run from August 2 – August 13, 2010 and will benefit children and youth experiencing homelessness throughout the Greater Cincinnati areas.
