"An average ambulance ride costs $1,100 and a single air transport ranges from $8,000-$20,000, and most of these unexpected costs are billed to the patient – regardless of whether he or she has insurance coverage."

Apollo MT, a brokerage firm that protects nearly 14,000 households each year against the high costs of emergency medical transport through its fully insured membership program, recently expanded its coverage area to many states. These states include Alaska, Washington, Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, D.C., Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, Nevada, and Wyoming.

The membership insurance program, which is available to all aforementioned state residents, provides complete coverage in case of an emergency medical transport by ground or air -- an expense that most insurance companies don't cover in full.

"An average ambulance ride costs $1,100 and a single air transport can range from $8,000-$20,000, and most of these unexpected costs are billed to the patient -- regardless of whether he or she has insurance coverage," notes Dr. Eric Stirling, a founder and co-owner of Apollo MT, who launched the membership brokerage after watching patients rack up enormous medical bills from emergency transport. Now, if someone is an Apollo MT member, any air or ground transportation bills are paid, with no balance bills or copays. It also covers multiple transports in one year.

"Most people assume that medical transport is only for car accidents and other trauma related injuries. But the fact is that many transports -- particularly in rural areas -- happen for common illnesses, injuries or pregnancies requiring neurologists, urologists or other medical professionals not available on a local level," adds Stirling. "In Washington State alone, there are more than 300,000 ground ambulance transports each year -- amounting to one transport for every 21 people living in the state." Those numbers are certainly higher in other states.

Apollo MT's one-year membership program costs only $100 and provides full coverage for the entire household, regardless of the number of emergency transports required. Apollo MT also offers a three-week travelers policy, for $25, which provides ground and air emergency transport coverage for people traveling domestically. This may be ideally suited to the younger population.

The Apollo MT memberships, which have been approved by the Washington State Insurance Commissioner, cover any person regardless of pre-existing illness, insurance status or age, and are active three days after sign up. Group and corporate plans are also available.
