Citizens for Modern Transit, a public transportation advocacy group based in St. Louis, announces the availability of a new implementation guide for their “Ten Toe Express” program.

The program guide – called "Step by Step to the Ten Toe Express" – outlines the steps needed to start a new “Ten Toe Express” program. The program itself encourages seniors to combine walking with public transportation to visit cultural and historic sites – a fun, novel form of exercise. The guide is aimed at professionals who create programs for older adults and is designed to be readily adaptable to many locations and budgets.

The program has enjoyed considerable success in St. Louis, with over 6,500 participants. One participant, Carol Haneman, had this to say about the program, “It has been so much fun making new friends on the Ten Toes adventures. […] You don’t notice that you’ve had a great walk and gotten some good exercise.”

The Ten Toes Express program is unique because it allows senior citizens to socialize, see parts of town they haven’t visited before, and learn to use public transportation – all while getting a healthy dose of exercise. The guide illustrates how to implement this program so that seniors may enjoy the benefits of this program all across the country.

The program guide is ideal for YMCA directors, church and synagogue program directors, senior centers or independent living facilities, social workers, public health professionals, and anyone who works directly with seniors.
