Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 2, 2010
Billions in State unclaimed money is being returned to the rightful owners. The economy has forced people to search for money anywhere they can get it. This coupled with increased state notices to account owners is resulting in people looking for and finding unclaimed funds that are being held by the State Treasury Department.
The states are trying their best to contact rightful owners of the cash through thousands of personal letters, emails and messages. However these are proving less effective as many of the people have shifted their residences and changed contact numbers.
California State Controller, John Chiang, reported $1.2 billion in unclaimed funds was returned to its rightful owners between January 2007 and February 2010. The States have ramped up efforts to contact property owners, "We're trying to right a horrible wrong," said Chiang. Under old laws, notices were not sent to missing money owners unless the controller's office had an address for the account holder different from that listed with the state Franchise Tax Board.
The reality is that US government does not have any centralized data for unclaimed cash. A citizen trying to find out unclaimed cash owed to him will not be able to do so effectively without the support from the websites like http://www.cashunclaimed.com. This site has a huge collective database and provide for quick online search. Jann Oldsmar of Florida found $5,000 in just 15 Minutes.
Site like Cashunclaimed.com offer Free Unclaimed Money Search for visitors. “With websites like ours, people can now find and claim their missing money in just minutes by entering their name,” said Nicole Anderson, Public Relations for Cashunclaimed.com. Anderson also stated, “Claiming your abandoned property is much simpler than it use to be and our efforts to inform the public about the existence of these millions of unclaimed money accounts has increased awareness of the free cash! The average claimant is finding almost $1000 in missing money.”
Most states are seeing an increase in unclaimed money claims. Last year, Michelle Bixler of Pennsylvania received her $35,000 check that was owed to her nine years back as an insurance amount. Another St. Louis person got his $1.6 million back. Russ Johnson could claim his parents’ $2,985.65 that hitherto he was not aware of and hence were unclaimed.
At the end of 2009, the Internal Revenue Service had more than $120 million in the form of unclaimed refund checks that were returned owing to wrong mailing address. The average undeliverable check was $1,148 and some taxpayers were unaware that they owe multiple refund checks.
As the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) reports, some unclaimed assets worth $32.9 billion are lying with the state treasuries and other agencies. The amount is rising every year in spite of increased number of claimants.
It is a high time to get in action. Do not to wait any longer, go online and 9 out of 10 Americans are likely to find the cash or property that they rightfully own.
