AmericanHunter.org, the Web’s premier hunting site, has spoken with celebrity hunters in the past, but in the latest exclusive interview, UFC 117 competitor and Hall of Fame inductee Matt Hughes—the winningest fighter in UFC history—said the thrill he feels when he’s in the Octagon being kicked, punched and beaten in front of millions of screaming fans pales in comparison to when his son bagged his first deer.
"If you take my son’s deer and compare it to anything I’ve done in the Octagon, I’ve got to say I was more excited for my son." Hughes said. "Just because I’ve been fighting for so long, and maybe I’ve gone stale on my career.”
Stale or not, Matt Hughes is preparing for another well-publicized fight with Ricardo Almeida in UFC 117, but beyond UFC, the interview talks about Hughes’ non-fighting passions—his faith and family first mentality and the fond memories of his introduction to hunting.
"When they make my headstone for my grave, the last thing I want on there was 'Fought in the UFC' or 'UFC Hall of Famer,'" Hughes said. "I want it to say that I was a good husband and a great father. Those are the things that are important to me."
If his winning prowess is any indicator of his commitments outside of MMA, he’s just as dangerous stalking whitetail as he is climbing into the ring.
