Durham, NC (PRWEB) August 19, 2010
There is no past-time more quintessentially American than baseball, and for many members of the military, nothing says home like their first visit to a United Service Organizations (USO) center. It seemed natural to the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin to pair the two by donating Durham Bulls tickets to the staff and volunteers of the United Service Organizations (USO) of North Carolina.
The Law Offices of James Scott Farrin donated a total of 24 seats to Durham Bulls baseball games on April 26 (against the Gwinnett Braves), May 6 (against the Scranton-WB Yankees) and June 28 (against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs).
The United Services Organization (USO) exists to meet the morale and recreational needs of U.S. service members and their families. The USO of North Carolina currently operates services-based centers in Jacksonville/Camp Lejeune and in Fort Bragg/Fayetteville. It also operates two travel-based centers, in the Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte-Douglas international airports. The travel-based centers function as airport lounges for military personnel, military retirees and their families.
Other United Services Organization (USO) of North Carolina support programs include deployment and homecoming care packages, holiday meals, special programs at its centers, tickets to sport and entertainment events, surprise birthday cakes to single service members and a food pantry.
Eric Sanchez, Chief Operating Officer at the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin, is a member of the United Service Organizations (USO) of North Carolina Raleigh-Durham Airport Center Council. As a former Marine, Eric Sanchez has a personal awareness of the important role the USO plays in the lives of military personnel from all five branches of service.
“The tickets are just a small way the firm and I can say ‘thank you’ to the United Service Organization (USO) staff and volunteers for all the work they do on behalf of the nation’s service members and their families,” Eric Sanchez said.
The USO was established in 1941 to meet a request by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt for civilian support of the military during World War II. The first USO center opened that year in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Other centers were soon to follow, including one in Jacksonville, N.C.
As U.S. forces drew-down following World War II, the USO as an organization was dissolved and its facilities closed. However, the Jacksonville, NC center remained open through the determined efforts of its volunteers. Today, this center is the longest continuously-operating USO facility in the world. The USO was reactivated with the onset of the Korean War in the 1950s. It has served the morale and recreation needs of U.S. service members ever since.
