The town of Judique in Inverness County Cape Breton is the home of the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre whose mission is to collect, preserve and promote the traditional Celtic music of Cape Breton Island through education, research and performance. Robin MacDonald, Director of Communications and Marketing, states ”Whether it is part of your heritage or something brand new, The Celtic Music Centre has been custom designed to get you tuned into Cape Breton music!”

The Celtic Music Interpretive Centre’s professional musicians explain the Gaelic culture and offer live demonstrations with topics including the influence of Highland bag-piping, step-dancing and the Gaelic language on the Cape Breton fiddle style and how they are all interwoven within Cape Breton’s Gaelic culture. Visitors to enjoy such tune types as marches, strathspeys, jigs and reels and watch them step-dance to the music.

Learn the basics of fiddle playing at a two hour fiddle workshop or better yet take the art of fiddling seriously and attend the Buddy MacMaster School of Fiddling October 11-15, taking place during the Celtic Colors International Festival. There are 10 instructors over five days teaching the unique style of Cape Breton fiddling. Instructors include Wendy MacIsaac, Mairi Rankin, Glenn Graham, Kinnon Beaton, Andrea Beaton, Glenn Graham, Stan Chapman, Carl MacKenzie, Colin Grant and Gabrielle MacLellan.

There you can take an interactive journey through samples of song, stories, dance, bagpipes and fiddle music and the story and the culture behind them. Try your hand at a tune, or better still, have a step on the old porch.

Visitors to the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre can also enjoy lunchtime ceilidhs Monday to Saturday with free live music and a traditional Cape Breton menu. July through mid-October features evening ceilidhs Wednesday evenings and Sunday ceilidhs year round from 3-7pm. The archival material consists of records of traditional and innovative home-grown Celtic musicians and collectors of Cape Breton memorabilia. These collections reveal unique features of the music within the context of community and family. The staff at the Centre will even research specific topics for visitors if they are notified in advance making a visit to the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre a truly personal experience.
