Current Transportation Security Administration airline regulations require most carry-on liquids, aerosols, and gels to be bottled in 3.4 ounce (100ml) containers or smaller. Exceptions to this rule are made for some medications, infant formula, and breast milk. In addition, liquids, including alcohol purchased after the security checkpoint are allowed on planes. These restrictions leave most wine lovers with little choice but to check in their wine as luggage, but even doing that is not without restriction. Passengers may check in up to five liters of alcohol with a content between 24% and 70%. Basically, each passenger is allowed to check in up to six 750ml bottles of wine.

Of course, just because TSA regulations allow a passenger to have bottles of wine in a suitcase of clothes, does not mean it’s desirable to do so. Airline baggage handling is often a rough and tumble process and mixing wine with clothes can result in an unexpected outcome. A broken wine bottle in checked luggage is enough to spoil at least the first day of anyone’s vacation.
