Dr. Howard Liebman, CEO & Superintendent of Smart Horizons Career Online Education (SHCOE), announced that the SHCOE Board of Directors has named Dr. Richard Goldman as the company’s new Chairman of the Board. Dr. Goldman brings to the position a vast array of experience as a teacher, administrator and developer of ground-breaking online education programs at the secondary and post-secondary level.
As Dean of the Graduate School of Education at Florida-based Nova Southeastern University (NSU), Goldman provided leadership in developing various undergraduate and graduate distance education programs for the nation’s top school superintendents and educational leaders. He was also instrumental in NSU’s obtaining accreditation as the nation's first distance Internet education program. Dr. Goldman also founded a series of innovative schools, including the University of Miami Online High School, a college-preparatory K-12 online school, and the Sagemont School, a private K-12 brick and mortar school located in Weston, FL.
“Smart Horizons Career Online Education is really a natural continuation of what I established with the University of Miami Online High School,” Goldman said. “The University of Miami model was a high-tuition, online college preparatory program, but we have a very different clientele for Smart Horizons Career Online Education. We are aiming at the 45 million high school dropouts nationwide who will be able to use SHCOE as a stepping stone to a new career. We determined that with SHCOE, we would develop a model with low tuition—less than a thousand dollars for the entire program. This program will aid students to move forward and earn an online high school diploma and provide the knowledge base to build a viable career.”
Smart Horizons Career Online Education is a private online high school district that gives students returning to the education process an opportunity to earn an 18-credit high school diploma as well as complete course work for a career certificate. Online career certificate courses are currently offered in the fields of health care, early childhood education, transportation services, homeland security, protection services, and office management.
“We have established Smart Horizons Career Online Education as the first private online high school district in the country,” Goldman said. “Our online academic model has tremendous potential for students seeking to re-enter the education process, and we plan on developing partnerships with higher education institutions as well as various community-based organizations, such as the Urban League, Head Start, YMCA, and United Way.”
Goldman said he looks forward to serving as a primary liaison for SHCOE as he integrates the company’s innovative online education program into the extensive network of contacts he has developed among education and community-based institutions during his career.
Goldman describes Smart Horizons Career Online Education as a melding of the expertise gained from developing programs such as Nova University’s distance education programs and the University of Miami Online High School, with an innovative and skilled approach to the development of new learning platforms and content.
“We are the first school to mesh online high school academics with career training,” Goldman said. “We feel this is exactly what the 45 million dropout students need. Based on our rapid growth in the past year, I see the SHCOE student population numbering in the hundreds of thousands within the next four or five years.”
