The year 2008 was looking to be an eventful year for thirty-one year old Indianapolis Metro Police Officer Jason Fishburn. His troublesome Nearsightedness and Astigmatism often interfered with his daily routines and his safety as a police officer. Finally taking matters into his own hands, he had embarked on a journey to change his life and his vision forever through LASIK vision correction at 20/20 Institute in Indianapolis.
While his life certainly did change that year, it was not in the way he had anticipated. Not only would 2008 become one of the most important and life-changing years in Officer Fishburn’s life, it almost became the last one he lived.
While serving a warrant on July 10, 2008, Officer Fishburn was shot in the head and torso and critically wounded. No longer was his focus on the goal of perfect vision. His entire focus now shifted to saving his life.
Thankfully, Officer Fishburn survived. In the months following the shooting, his recovery and rehabilitation from the injuries prevented Officer Fishburn from pursuing his vision correction procedure. After much time and effort, he was cleared to re-schedule his LASIK consultation and examination with 20/20 Institute.
His consultation was completed on July 10, 2010—exactly two years to the day that he was shot. The LASIK procedure a few days later was a success. Coming in to 20/20 Institute with 20/200 vision, Officer Fishburn now sees better than 20/20 after his LASIK procedure.
As a way of thanking him for his dedication and commitment to the community, 20/20 Institute completed Officer Fishburn’s LASIK procedure free of charge.
“As a patient in our practice and a police officer in our community, we were very concerned about Officer Fishburn’s health and well-being,” commented Brian Royster of 20/20 Institute. “Once his physical and emotional recovery was well underway, Officer Fishburn contacted our office and was ready to pursue LASIK surgery. As a protector and servant of the community, and for all Officer Fishburn has endured over the past two years, we were delighted to offer him LASIK at no cost.”
“It was our privilege to help Jason obtain visual freedom, and it was an honor that he returned to 20/20 Institute for our care after everything that he has been through in the last two years. Helping people see better is a joy every day, but being able to help change Jason’s life for the better is a source of great pride,” commented Dr. Diana Fisher, Clinical Director, 20/20 Institute.
Helping Officer Fishburn has inspired 20/20 Institute to thank all police officers, firemen, active armed forces, and other first responder personnel. To honor the memory of those lost in the 9/11 tragedy and to thank all the first responders and military personnel that make our communities a safer place to live, 20/20 Institute has proclaimed the month of September as “Visual Freedom Month.” In celebration, 20/20 Institute will offer a special savings to these brave and patriotic individuals. For the month of September, First Responder Personnel and Active Military are entitled to receive 35% savings on 20/20 Institute’s Lifetime Commitment plan—nearly a $1750 savings when having LASIK performed on both eyes. Full details about this First Responder and Active Military offer can be provided by contacting Brian Royster via email at brianr(at)2020institute(dot)com. Identification to confirm an individual’s current status as a First Responder or Active Military will be required.
