Waters Field was the place to be on Saturday, August 7th, for The 15th Annual Northern Virginia Wiffle® Ball World Series. The charity event was sponsored by The 2 Young Foundation, an organization dedicated to raising money for the fight against brain cancer. The day was filled with games, prizes, fun and even celebrity appearances including NBC-Channel 4’s newest young anchor, Craig Melvin, and one of Washington’s most respected TV news anchors, Mr. Jim Vance, who threw out the first pitch, as well as the Town of Vienna’s Mayor Jane Seeman in attendance.

The day kicked-off at 8am as all forty of the Wiffle® ball team members checked in at the gate and made their way onto “The Field of Dreams,” where they were given their official team gear and began to rally with the other players. After a brief introduction speech by 2YF’s President, Michael Ryan, the national anthem was performed for the energetic crowd by Mandi Meros of the ultimate 80’s tribute band, The Reflex. At 10am, legendary NBC-Channel 4 anchor, Jim Vance, stepped onto the pitcher’s mound and launched the ceremonial first pitch - putting the Northern Virginia Wiffle® World Series officially in motion.

The NVWWS had multiple mini-stadiums laid out at Waters Field for the games to take place throughout the day, and Fast Plastic’s team was the recipient of the coveted “Bedell Cup” again, continuing their two year winning streak. Mark Meana, mentor to Brian Bedell, was inducted into the NVWWS Hall of Fame this year for his dedication to the foundation, and for his distinct and meaningful relationship with Brian. It was Mark’s mentorship that helped shape Brian into the man that so many looked up to as he fought valiantly against brain cancer.

2YF has sponsored the Wiffle® World Series for the past six years, and with remarkable generosity and outstanding support it has contributed over $250,000 in support of its cause. The 2 Young Foundation is sincerely thankful that such reputable figures were in attendance for this year’s tournament, and equally delighted with the large number of teams and spectators that contributed to the success of the fundraiser. Thanks to the dedication of the supporters, including corporate sponsorships, 2YF will be able to donate almost $20,000 towards furthering the effort to find a cure for brain cancer.
