Forget 3-D cinema – a Crewe colour printing company has become the first in the UK to be able to send 3 Dimensional digital proofs to its customers.

The Printing House who also trade as Print Buying Direct, based in Crewe, UK, gained access to the technology when they upgraded their existing Heidelberg workflow to a revolutionary print workflow solution system supplied by Presstek.

The 3-D technology was developed in the United States by Presstek’s parent company and The Printing House was the first UK printing company to be allowed to use it.

“When we first looked at it we thought it knocked our socks off - it really is that good”, said Peter Harrison, who is joint managing director at the company, together with Paul Springthorpe: “We absolutely love it and so do our brochure and newsletter customers, even Christmas cards can be proofed on it with pages turned and angled to any aspect”.

With the technology, customers receive a proof in their email in the normal way. When they open it, however, they find they can turn each page over, hold pages half-open and rotate the publication freely through 360 degrees. There is even an option for proofing special effects such as Spot UV varnish, whereby as the proof is rotated the spot UV will actually shine more than the base paper it is printed on - just as it would in the real world.

“It’s very much like holding the document in your hand, so you can get a good idea of what the finished product will feel like in your hand because the pages behave like real paper”, added Peter.

The current solution only works for documents 4 pages or more, such as booklets, brochures, newsletters etc. But in a few months we will be able to mock up presentation folders and multi page leaflets with complicated folds such as maps or gatefold leaflets.

“We are getting an awful lot of positive feedback about it and it’s great to bring another printing first to Crewe”.

Keep an eye out as our new Christmas Card Printing microsite launches soon - you will be able to order Photo Christmas Cards, Personalised Christmas Cards and Corporate Christmas cards all using our interactive Christmas Card Templates.

The Printing House, established in 1991, currently employs 37 people and handles all types of graphic design, printing and internet work - they are one of the North west's largest suppiers of Banner Stands
