Mocana, a company that focuses on smart device security, today announced the expansion of its leadership team with the hire of Mike Siegel as Mocana's new vice president of products.

Mr. Siegel, an expert in security product management, is expected to play a key role in expanding upon Mocana's vision for securing the Internet of Things, the billions of smart devices (including smartphones), that are increasingly connecting to IP networks, across every industry sector. With a solid list of marquee customers and a reputation for outstanding security expertise, Mocana is developing the industry's only device-independent Smart Device security platform. Mocana's platform will secure all aspects of disparate devices like smartphones, medical devices, cars, industrial equipment and internet-enabled TVs as well as the applications and services they carry. Mocana is achieving this with a new security paradigm, a device-independent Universal Security Client that can be provided with customized and context-intelligent security services from the cloud.

The category that Mocana pioneered - smart device security - received significant validation recently with Intel's record-breaking $7.7B acquisition of McAfee. Intel spoke of the need for 'securing a device-dominated Internet' as the key rationalization for the deal. Market players are jockeying for position as the need to secure non-PC devices increasingly demands the attention of IT staffs worldwide, as evidenced in Mocana's just-published Summer 2010 Device Security Survey. Mocana has also been in the news recently for taking an investment from security giant Symantec, and for winning the business of enterprise smartphone software provider Good Technology to standardize on Mocana's software to secure Good's smartphone client across Android, Apple iOS and Windows platforms.

"Mike built a reputation at McAfee of visionary leadership for emerging technologies that was rewarded with a progressive increase in responsibilities. While most of the market is still scrambling around madly trying to figure out how to secure phones, Mike also recognizes that there is a much, much larger opportunity to secure all smart devices. I think he's years ahead of everybody else in his thinking," said Adrian Turner, CEO of Mocana. "Most security 'apps' being sold for phones simply won't scale across the heterogeous device types that are fast becoming commonplace across the consumer, enterprise and federal markets. Our customers are demanding solutions that will be able to deal with a rapidly evolving smart device threat landscape, and Mike has the instincts and the security chops to deliver."

As vice president of products, Mr. Siegel will be responsible for the strategy and management of Mocana's complete portfolio of software and services that make up the Smart Device Security platform. Most recently, Mike played a leading role in defining McAfee's business and product strategy in the mobile device and smartphone security arena, resulting in the acquisition of privately-held Trust Digital, Inc. in mid-2010. Previously at McAfee, Mike oversaw the entire McAfee Data Protection product line, including McAfee's leading encryption and data loss prevention technologies, and was responsible for global product management and strategy.

A veteran of the technology and IT security industry, Mr. Siegel is widely considered an expert in device and data protection and helped formulate McAfee's business strategy through four significant technology acquisitions. Mike holds a bachelor's degree and MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, and has broad set of career experiences including technology investment banking, account management, corporate development and product management.

"While I am sad to be leaving my outstanding colleagues at McAfee, I am thrilled to be joining Mocana at a very exciting time for the company. Mocana has built a strong reputation as the leader in securing smart devices and I believe the market opportunity going forward is phenomenal," said Siegel. "To make the Internet of Things really work for us, we're going to have to move fast and far along the curve to make sure these smart devices are secured. Mocana has the deep expertise, the right approach, the agility and the track record of executing to make that happen."
